SLDM Food Pantry

SLDM Food Bank Very Low
It is true that we are very low on many items mainly due to the volume of people who have been coming to the pantry - both new and old in the past months. Hopefully, the changes we have made will help -

  1. We have standardized our family orders, meaning that regardless of the size of family, it is a predetermined size (being "4"). So if a family of 6 comes into the pantry, they will be shorted if comparing to the items before whereas, a family of 2 would have more.
  2. We have eliminated the following items due to cost, being: sugar, oil, flour , diapers/ wipes and other items in that other products could substitute for usem, such as: all purpose cleaner for toilet cleaner and paper towels since there is laundry soap that if towels were used, these can be washed and reused.
  3. Lastly, we have made the geographical area that the pantry serve smaller; whereas before, an individual could come from anywhere as long as they had proper ID & a current utility bill. We have seen people with ID from Greenwood area and feel that if the people are spending monies to come this far north, the monies would be better spent where they live rather than the gas. As such, effective 9/1/2010, the pantry will be serving all of Hamilton County and the Marion County zip codes of: 46240, 46250 & 46256.

We still have shoppers who buy items from Walmart on a weekly basis; however, it has not kept up with the numbers served.

While it has not been confirmed, I believe we will be using the food bank up at White River church more frequently to replenish our supplies.

While I believe that if each family would bring one item to Mass each week, it would help the pantry out; however I have to be realistic in that not everyone has the extra to give.
